Pierre Koenig: Living with Steel

Book Design

Pierre Koenig, a grandfather of modern architecture can be learned about in the writing of this book as well as experienced in its design. Type and image styles work together to create the tones of modern architecture present in Koenig’s work.

This chronological display of his residential and commercial architecture features the iconic photographs of Julius Shulman a staple of Los Angeles modernism. The graphic design of the book embodies a modernist theme - transforming the grid used in the layout into a visual design element. The typeface used throughout the text was designed as an homage to Rudolph Schindler a predecessor of Pierre Koenig.
