Tender Buttons: Objects, Food, and Rooms

Expressive Typography Anthology

I took creating an anthology of Gertrude Stein’s book of prose,Tender Buttons: Objects, Food, and Rooms, as an opportunity to translate Stein’s poetic approach to language as a material and apply a similar thinking to typography. By reducing my thinking of the text’s letterforms into black shapes in space I was able to construct compositions of her writings into a single collection with multiple reading experience existing simultaneously. When type-setting the various words of her prose I found myself exploring interpretations of page margins, typographic voice, and heirarchy while also remaining respectful to her original poetic vision.
