Cala Health

Product Experience + Mobile App

Cala Health is an FDA certified, over the counter wearable, for people who suffer from the neurological condition, Essential tremor. Essential tremor makes fine motor skills such as, eating, getting dressed, and writing—progressively more difficult as age increases. Cala's patented technology uses TAPS electrical stimulation on specifically targeted nerves to suppress essential tremor. As an overall philosophy, we set out to change the stigma of electrical shock therapy and design a pleasant, therapeutic experience that builds user confidence.

Initially conceived of as a wrist-worn device, our experience design team and product development team worked together to conclude that Cala could provide a much more comfortable, discrete, and efficient experience by targeting the nerve endings in user's fingers rather than their wrists. This decision was crucial in realizing our expectations for practical all-day use of the product. Users are asked to wear the ring all day to monitor their frequency of motion and to allow Cala to strategically notify users when it's a good time to undergo TAPS therapy.

Living with Cala means users build a direct and constant relationship with their tremor and have a tool to manage their TAPS and lifestyle—enabling them a way to regain control.

Scientifically backed insights provide Cala users with feedback and meaningful goals based on their independent activity with Cala. These goals help guide users toward a lifestyle that reduces their tremor.

Essential tremor responds differently to different lifestyles. We constantly monitor voluntary and involuntary motion and make it easy to log lifestyle triggers so Cala can predict when it's time to suggest therapy. To measure neurohealth we developed a graphic that represents voluntary and involuntary motion throughout the wearer's day, and their corresponding feelings and activities. This provides an experience which helps people better manage their tremor.

Cala automatically syncs with your calendar to strategically provide therapy and gives you the ability to preemptively suppress tremor.

The results of each day are captured in calendar view in order to give pa a broad view of tremor patterns and long-term improvement.
